14.4.2009 Táborsko (CR)

It was really a day of surprises today - the mating of Great Crested Grebe has finally begun and I saw one Kingfisher flying over a stream - I was afraid that this year cold winter decimated population of these birds in Czech Republic - e.g. in my home village Košín I have not seen Kingfisher yet during past three days although they are pretty well seen in springtime here otherwise.

Absolute surprise was a found of Eagle Owl sitting on three eggs. The nest is sittuated in a place where Kingfishgers usually nest in their burrows but when we came to that spot three days ago, we found all the burrows abandoned but there was a apparently desolate nest on the rock ledge. We had no idea who was nesting there but if I was more experienced I would have known in a second - not only the feathers and eggs but also the skeletons of mice are unequivocal sign of Eagle Owl! Today I went to check that place again and to my surprise (I thought it was abandoned nest) the Eagle Owl has flown away just before I reached the nest...
