14.4.2009 Táborsko (CR)

It was really a day of surprises today - the mating of Great Crested Grebe has finally begun and I saw one Kingfisher flying over a stream - I was afraid that this year cold winter decimated population of these birds in Czech Republic - e.g. in my home village Košín I have not seen Kingfisher yet during past three days although they are pretty well seen in springtime here otherwise.

Absolute surprise was a found of Eagle Owl sitting on three eggs. The nest is sittuated in a place where Kingfishgers usually nest in their burrows but when we came to that spot three days ago, we found all the burrows abandoned but there was a apparently desolate nest on the rock ledge. We had no idea who was nesting there but if I was more experienced I would have known in a second - not only the feathers and eggs but also the skeletons of mice are unequivocal sign of Eagle Owl! Today I went to check that place again and to my surprise (I thought it was abandoned nest) the Eagle Owl has flown away just before I reached the nest...

4.4.2009 Herdla (NO)

I visited Herdla soon in the morning to avoid all the people that are usually coming at weekends but today the first families with children turned up just before lunch time when I was already leaving home.

So the Spring is really here - several flocks of Starlings were flying over the fields - ca. 80 ex. altogether; Lapwings were performign their air dances - ca. 20 ex., sometimes they gets in conflict with Crows. All around it sounds the typical voics of Oystercatchers who are now in number of about 50 ex. at Herdla. Also one pair of Shelduck and 2 ex. of Ringed Plover was observed.

28.3.2009 Asane, Kalandsvatnet (NO)

The first real spring day in Bergen - the air gets warm, sun is stronger and we got one more hour this weekend...

There is nothing special though on the Langavatnet lake in Asane - just two rather untypical Oystercatchers - most of them stay at the sea coast. Since the first record 10.1. the Dipper did not show up at all, probably left or is somewhere else, upper on the stream. Four Whooper Swans flying over me and one Wood Pigeon was the only other birds to be mentioned. I am heading south for the Kalandsvatnet lake - not much change from the last visit - one pair of Common Merganser and Common Goldeneye on the lake, ca. 13 Lapwings on the shore; number of Starlings increased - some 20 of them sitting on the trees and singing...

Finally I got some time to go out birdning a little – the weather was OK today without rain and also the Winter is leaving us here around Bergen! Today trip was a good pooof of that – Lapwings are always amongst the first Spring migrants here although there were a few exemplares at the Askoy island coast shortly after New Year – probably overwintering birds? Tha past week I also saw first Oystercatchers of this year in the harbor while walking to the work. So the Spring is really here, it is well heard from the bird singing, so far mostly Starlings though...
