Gulls in flight

1D3_0779PS Birds in flight (BIF) photography is one of the biggest challenge in wildlife photography. Besides the need to master the panning technique we also need to employ good photo equipment – when making the pictures of birds in flight the biggest effort is to keep the object (bird) within the viewfinder and one has not much time to control exposure or focus of the moving object at the same time. It was in June 2008 when I tested the new camera canon 1D Mark III for the first time – I headed to the Sotra island nearby Bergen, Norway and on the way back I stopped at two good places to make pictures of flying gulls and test the focus speed and accuracy of the new camera body. Compared to my old canon 20D the focusing was far better and easier. Sometimes when I used 20D I often lost the focus when I lost the bird in the viewfinder and quite often the focus stopped and did not come back to the bird – this is not happening now with 1D Mark III – focus always comes back and follows the bird very precisely! It was really fun to make pictures of flying gulls, unfortunately I have not got time since then to come back and make some better photos, I hope to get chance this year, the Spring is already knocking on the door...
