A little Summer reminiscence

Common Sandpiper (Actitis hypoleucos), Sotra, NorwayThere is not much to see outside these days in February, moreover the Kalandsvatnet lake that I wanted to visit this weekend in order to make some pictures of Common Goldeneye (Bucephala clangula) and Whooper Swans (Cygnus cygnus) froze over and so I ended up sitting in front of my PC digging out the the last decent images from the last year – today I came across the pictures from June 2008, from the day when I tried my new camera Canon Mark 1DIII for the first time in the field… SO it is June 2008 and on the way to the northern tip of Sotra Island (Bergen, Norway) I am watching a female Red-breasted Merganser (Mergus serrator) resting on the rock at the shore of Stegeviksvatnet lake. After getting closer I can see there are also two Common Sandpipers (Actitis hypoleucos) wading along the lake shore and so Im swiftly lying down on the ground and hide under the masking scarf in the hope to get some photos of these birds. One of the Sandpipers flies closer and lands on the rock some 12 meters far from me – that is not very good distance even with 500mm lens combined with 1.4x teleconverter. Fortunately the bird seems to be rather curious about me and gets closer after a while – it is still not ideal – I will have to crop the pictures and ISO 800 also is not the best, but I can at least test out the sensitivity performance of the new camera body. So I am taking a series of photographs until the Sandpiper gets too close to me – I have to move a bit and the background is more disturbing – I decide to change my stand – only few meters from me there is a better place with good overview, better background and more light…and really, after a while the Sandpiper comes. Unfortunately at the same time the bird gets frightened away by men who appeared right above me. When the men start fishing just few meters from me I realize that the Sandpipers will probably not come back and I am leaving home…so here are few pictures of Common Sandpiper from that day in June 2008...
